The Hairy-tailed Mole (Parascalops breweri) is the only member of the genus Parascalops. The Hairy-tailed Mole (Parascalops breweri) is a medium-sized mole; dark gray or near black in color; with short appendages; tail is short and well-haired; manus (hands) are large and rotated so the palm faces outward; teeth are entirely white; skull is compressed dorsoventrally with a long rostrum; complete auditory bullae; and complete but weak zygomata (Naughton, 2012). As the name implies, the tail is well-haired, which is useful for distinguishing this species from the similar-looking and sometimes co-occurring Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus).
