Flying squirrels belong to the genus Glaucomys in the family Sciuridae. The common name is misleading, as these species do not fly but rather glide. They are distinguished from all other squirrels in the family Sciuridae by having a patagium, a furry membrane of skin that stretches from the wrist of the forelimb to the ankle of the hindlimb. All species are nocturnal. The genus comprises three recognized species, all of which are found in the United States.
