Formerly included in Microdipodops pallidus, genetic analysis by Hafner et al. (2025) revealed that the Kawich Kangaroo Mouse (Microdipodops ruficollaris) is a distinct species. According to Hafner et al. (2025), this species is known from "from sandy basins and uplands of south-central Nevada."
