The Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus) is the only species in the genus Scalopus. The Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus) is a medium-sized mole; dark gray or near black in color; with short appendages; tail is short and scantily haired, appearing naked; manus (hands) are large and rotated so the palm faces outward; teeth are entirely white; skull is compressed dorsoventrally with a long rostrum; complete auditory bullae; and complete but weak zygomata (Naughton, 2012). The nearly naked tail is useful for distinguishing this species from the similar-looking and sometimes co-occurring Hairy-tailed Mole (Parascalops breweri).
