WhiskerWiki:Sandbox/United States Small Mammal Portal

The United States Small Mammal Portal is a starting point for exploring the small mammals of every US state. It brings together WhiskerWiki's state-by-state records for two groups: the rodents (Rodentia), the largest order of mammals, and the shrews, moles and their relatives (Eulipotyphla).
The map below compares the two groups across the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Hover over a state (or tap it on a phone) to see how many species of each are recorded there, which species are found in no other state, and which families are best represented. Click a state to open its page, where you'll find its full species list and its counties.

About the data
The counts come from the same species-by-state lists shown on each state's page. They are built from species range maps: a species counts in a state if its range reaches any part of it, so a state can list a species that lives in only one corner of it. Use By species above the map to see where any one species is recorded, then open its page for the full range map.
